We’ve learned over the years that the best way to make furniture is to allow the material itself to guide the design and building process. Working with a natural product as arresting as the lumber that we see day in and day out, we strive, as often as not, to get out of the way and let the wood speak for itself. The slab featured in this project didn’t need much help from us at all to set a tone. Our clients here are professional homebuilders who were remodeling their own home, aiming to give themselves some of the comfort and beauty that for years they had offered their own clients. Along with the years of design and building experience that they had came a strong sense of style and purpose. Over the course of the design, we perused Berkshire Products massive inventory of live-edge slabs, eventually landing on this ten-foot piece of Bastogne walnut.
Selecting the material, though, is just one step in our collaborative design process. Once we had a piece picked out, we took the time to determine how best to make use of the slab, which in this case turned out to be using it in two separate pieces of furniture, a dining table and matching coffee table. We love to absolutely maximize the utility of each piece of wood that comes through our doors, both in terms of minimizing waste and in terms of the life that the finished pieces give our clients. By using the same slab for two tables, we can tie together the finished design of the home, creating continuity from one room to the next.
While the dining table uses steel bases with a walnut box beam, the coffee table uses a style that we call an “infinity base”. In this style curved, turning corners allow each section of leg to flow seamlessly into the next. It’s tremendously gratifying to work with our clients, combining our experience and expertise with their own sensibilities in developing furniture that achieves exactly their visions.
The table on show in the link below is also built with totally custom, solid wood bases in a different custom Cannon Hill design, though this time in oak:
